Waterproof cameras are no big deal these days, but in the 1930s, Bruce Mozert was the only person in the world who had one. Mozert pioneered underwater photography in Silver Springs, Florida. He had stopped there en route to a shoot in Miami in 1938 when he’d heard that his favorite actor, Johnny Weissmuller, was filming Tarzan there; he ended up staying for the rest of his life (he still lives nearby). Mozert wanted the world to know how amazingly clear the water in Silver Springs was. So he built a giant waterproof housing for his camera, put on some scuba gear, and—for the next 45 years—created memorable underwater scenes of everyday American life. He did fun things like use dry ice to make bubbles and cans of condensed milk to create smoke.

Sometimes we may only want someone that stole an image to remove it from their website. Carolyn Wright is a US attorney that specializes in photography, and associated legalities primarily in the US. She wrote an article for NatureScape on how to have a stolen image removed from a website through the use of a Takedown Notice sent to the offender’s ISP.

Finding an unauthorized use of your photograph on the web is upsetting. But what can you do about it? You can contact an attorney for assistance. But if you haven’t registered your photo in advance of the infringement, then you won’t be eligible for statutory damages. Attorneys will take such cases on contingency only under certain circumstances. It then will cost a lot to pursue the infringement when paying the attorney an hourly fee. In the alternative, you can send a cease and desist and/or a demand for payment yourself to the infringer. But such letters are often ignored.

Researchers at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University have developed a camera with a layout similar in size and shape to the human eye. The eye camera is based on “single-crystalline silicon detectors and electronics, configured in a stretchable, interconnected mesh,” according to the University of Illinois.

The curved technology will put an entire image in focus, in contrast to today’s cameras, which take images that are sharper in the center than near the edges, according to researchers. Plus, the technology could be a big step toward the creation of a bionic eye similar to the one worn by the “Terminator.” More
