A Little History On The 56 Geeks

The 56 Geeks Project started out as a doodle or two i did in a sketchbook on a saturday afternoon. I was just jotting down some of my favorite geeky stereotypes and i thought, “why not flesh this out a bit and do a bunch of them?”.

It quickly became clear that others might like to have this thing in the form of a print. If you were wondering why the number is 56, it is simply because that is how many I could fit on a 20×30 inch poster print. Lame, huh? (Yeah, I know that 42 would have been geekier, but thems the breaks.)

Click HERE to view the whole poster, or here to see each image up on Flickr.

Thank you Sandra.

LEGO Digital DesignerThe LEGO Digital er is a free application (Windows or Mac) that lets you play with LEGOs on your computer. I’ve just played with it a little, but it’s pretty awesome. You can rotate your models in 3D space, and the application features 762 unique bricks to build with.

Tulips

I was going to go out and shoot in the woods today, but decided to stop by the florist and invest a couple of dollars in some tulips. Brought the tulips home, put them in a vase and started to shoot. Didn’t like the results, so I took the tulips out of the vase and laid them in front. Here are the results.

We have a little park near the center of Ocala called Tuscawilla.  Today they’re were a couple of guys having fun with your RC boat’s.  I’ve shot RC planes and birds in flight, but these were extremely hard to shoot.  I must’ve taken about 180 photos and only 11 were acceptable.  Not only do you have the fast forward speed but also with the bouncing up and down it was hard to get a sharp image.  I will have to do better next time.  The odd-looking pontoon boat is a rescue boat.  It retrieves disabled boats.

You don’t need a computer, an Internet connection, or even the keypad on your phone or mobile device. GOOG-411 is voice-activated, so you can access it from any phone (mobile or land line), in any location, at any time. For free.

Dial (1-800) GOOG-411. Say where. Say what you’re looking for. GOOG-411 will connect you with the business you choose.

If you are calling from a mobile device, GOOG-411 can even send you a text message with more details and a map. Simply say “Text message” or “Map it.” It’s 1-800-GOOG-411.

I don’t know if this is true or not. It’s a great story, true or not. From Shelly’s Snippets
When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it.
Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was ‘Information Please’ and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone’s number and the correct time. Read the rest of this entry »

After having dug to a depth of 10 meters last year, Scottish scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the Scots, in the weeks that followed, British scientists dug to a depth of 20 meters, and shortly after, headlines in the UK newspapers read: “British archaeologists have found traces of 200 year old copper wire and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the Scots.”

One week later, “The Kerryman,” a southwest Irish newsletter, reported the following:  “After digging as deep as 30 meters in peat bog near Tralee, Paddy O’Droll, a self taught archeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Paddy has therefore concluded that 300 years ago Ireland had already gone wireless.”
