The Real Robinson Crusoe

In 1704, Alexander Selkirk was left on a small island hundreds of miles off the coast of South America when he argued with his captain about the seaworthiness of the ship. He was right about the ship, but Selkirk spent four years and four months on the island, eating goats and plums and making friends with feral cats. Read the story of the man who inspired Daniel Defoe to write Robinson Crusoe at Damn Interesting. Link

I’m playing around with different SlideShow software. This one is called SOUNDSLIDES Pro. It’s a slideshow with sound. Let me know what you think about the nostalgic soundtrack. I know it doesn’t belong with the slides, but it was an interesting tune.

Caution the audio is a bit loud, trying to find a fix for this.

Flickr Creative Commons

With FlickrCC (Flickr Creative Commons) you can easily find photos on Flickr that were released under the Creative Commons license. Just enter a word(s) into the textbox. Click on ‘find’ and you’ll get all photos with a CC license that match all the search word(s) in the picture’s title, tags or description.

The panel on the left displays the first 36 matching photos. Click on any of these thumbnails to get a slightly larger image and the attribution details displayed in the right hand section.

Right click the image and ‘save image as’ if you want to use this size, or click on the link in the attribution text to go to Flickr and chose a different sized image. Don’t forget to include the attribution text in any work you produce using the picture.

  • A female lead with feminist leanings will always despise a macho
hero – until he rescues her from certain death and then she’ll become
totally dependent. Soon afterwards, the hero becomes vulnerable and
tells her about his tragic loss that explains his attitude.

The Great Blue Heron, Ardea herodias, is a wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common over most of North and Central America as well as the West Indies and the Galápagos Islands, except for the far north, or in deserts and high mountains where there is no water for it to feed in.

An old man lived alone in the country. He wanted to dig his potato garden but it was very hard work as the ground was hard. His only son Fred, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.

Dear Fred,
I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my potato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over I know you would dig the plot for me.
Love,
Dad

A few days later he received a letter from his son.
